Mc Jum Thomas Chigowo is a seasoned expert in agricultural and environmental management, with over 20 years of experience in soil science and sustainable agriculture. He holds a Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, reflecting his multidisciplinary expertise in both ecological and agricultural systems. His academic and professional work bridges the gap between environmental science and rural livelihoods, focusing on solutions that enhance sustainable land use and resource efficiency among smallholder farmers. He has made significant contributions to national agricultural policy development and implementation in Malawi, focusing on practices that enhance soil fertility and promote climate-smart agriculture. Having held several key positions within the Ministry of Agriculture, including Chief Land Resources Conservation Officer, he has proven his leadership and innovative approach to land resource management. Presently, as a lecturer at the University of Livingstonia, he is committed to educating the next generation of environmental and agricultural professionals and continuing his research on soil management. His work has been recognized internationally, where he actively participates in conferences and workshops, sharing insights on agricultural practices and environmental sustainability.
Mc Jum is also a member of various national and international groupings like being a Focal Point for the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), National Conservation Agriculture Taskforce (NCATF), Regional Grouping on Conservation Agriculture, Rainwater Harvesting Association of Malawi (RHAM), Soil Health Consortium of Malawi (SOhCOM), East and Southern Africa Sub-Committee (EASCO) on soil characterization and diagnosis. Mc jum is a dedicated advocate for community engagement in agriculture and is involved in various professional organizations, contributing to the advancement of sustainable agriculture in Malawi and beyond.
